Horror Editorial Review
The 1981 classic "The Howling," directed by Joe Dante, has received a celebratory re-release in a Steelbook 4K UHD format that has thoroughly impressed fans and newcomers alike. This edition offers a pristine transfer of the original film negative, enhancing the film's visual quality and delivering a stellar viewing experience. What sets this release apart is the extensive array of bonus features that delve into the film's behind-the-scenes magic. The extras include insightful commentary from author Gary Brandner, who shares his perspective on the adaptation of his novel into film, discussing the creative choices and challenges faced in the process. "The Howling" stands out in the horror genre not only for its creepy atmosphere but also for its wit and self-aware humor that keeps the audience engaged. The transformation effects designed by Rob Bottin remain unparalleled, having left a lasting impression since their debut. The film balances horror with light-hearted moments, showcasing a cast that seems to genuinely enjoy their roles, contributing to the film's charm. Notably, Dee Wallace's performance is highlighted as a pivotal moment in her career. Critics have noted the film's blend of suspense and comedy as major draws, with its clever references to other horror films and unexpected cameos that invite appreciation from cinema buffs. While some viewers may find the film lacking in action, it compensates with a rich narrative and distinctive characters. Even decades later, "The Howling" manages to resonate with audiences, cementing its status as a beloved horror staple.
